Crochet Cross Bookmark

Every pattern I've seen for crocheted cross bookmarks requires doing the staff in one piece, then joining the yarn to add the arms separately. I wanted a pattern that could be worked in one piece for a Demand Media article. This one took about 30 minutes to work up, and it's all worked in one piece starting with a foundation chain that's the full length of the bookmark.

And, since eHow articles have to follow AP style, they can be a pain to follow for experienced crocheters. The simpler pattern follows after the jump.





 One-Piece Crochet Cross Bookmark

  • Small amount of sport or baby yarn, main color
  • Small amount of sport or baby yarn, contrasting color
  • Crochet hook, size D
  1. With main color, ch 43.
  2. Sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in next 11 ch. Sl st into the next chain. Turn, leaving remaining stitches unworked.
  3. Bring the yarn behind the unworked stitches. Work 1 sc in the bottom of the 12 ch st worked in the previous step. Work 2 sc in the end stitch to turn the corner. This forms the staff of the corss.
  4. 1 sc in next 3 sc. Ch 5. 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 4 sc. Sl stich into the next sc on the staff.Ch 1. Turn.
  5. Sc in each sc to the end of the arm. Ch 1. Turn.
  6. Sc in each sc back to the staff of the cross. Sl st into next chain on the staff.
  7. 1 sc in each sc to the end of the staff. Sl st into the next unworked ch. Turn work so that you can continue up along the other side of the staff.
  8. 1 sc in next 5 sc. Sl into next sc. Ch 5. 
  9. Turn. 1 sc in each sc. Ch 1. Turn.
  10. 1 sc in next 5 sc. Sl st into next sc. The first arm of the cross is complete.
  11. 1 sc in each sc to the end of the staff. Sl st into next unworked ch. Turn your work so you can continue up the other side of the staff.
  12. 1 sc in next 4 sc. Sl st into next sc.
  13. Ch 5. Turn and work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to the staff. Sl st into next sc on staff. Turn.
  14. Sc in each sc. Ch 1. Turn.
  15. Sc in each sc. Sl st into next sc on staff.
  16. Sc in each sc to the top of the cross. Sl st into the 1st sc of the 1st row to round the top of the staff. Break yarn and weave in ends.
  17. Attach contrasting color in the last ch st before the staff. Sl st into each sc around the cross. Sl st into beginning sl st. Break yarn and weave in ends.
